about

TYFT is led by Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson and featuring drummer Jim Black and alto saxophonist/bass clarinetist Andrew D’Angelo. Meg Nem Sa is an incendiary and hard-driving new direction for TYFT, whose debut release in 2002 revealed an artistic conception that included nimbly executed compositions, fiery free improvisation, atmospheric electronic ambiences, and unexpected humor. Jensson’s following recording, 2004’s Ditty Blei expanded the TYFT trio to include trumpeter Herb Robertson and bassist Trevor Dunn, and tipped the balance of Jensson’s art toward avant-garde jazz.
Meg Nem Sa highlights Jensson as one of the most unpredictable and unclassifiable guitarists today. And without sacrificing the alternatingly ethereal and unsettling atmospheres of TYFT’s debut release, they crank out tightly focused tunes refracting such influences as Led Zeppelin, Messhuggah and Sonic Youth, yet through the band’s own deranged prism. TYFT is a working band with a singular identity all their own, and Meg Nem Sa makes clear that these musicians have a level of nearly telepathic communication that can only come from years of working together.
The first track “Led Tyftelin” is a new form of dynamic power-trio rock, with Jensson cranking out deep and chunky metal chords, Black holding down the twisted groove like a skewed John Bonham, and D’Angelo pushing an angular theme on alto sax through the middle before unleashing a solo of pure destruction. The following tunes continue the spirit of raw and propulsive immediacy, with Jensson in the role of both guitarist and bassist, locking in with D’Angelo on nimbly executed unison lines or breaking into counterpoint as Black crisply punches the beat. The improvisation “Okkar,” featuring the duo of Black and Jensson displays the drummer and guitarist at their most freewheeling, as Black rolls and jabs his way in accompaniment to the guitarist’s lightning-fast legato runs and noise bursts, suggesting a crazed hybrid of Allan Holdsworth and Thurston Moore. In utter contrast “Sezt Nidur,” is spacious and lovely, with Jensson’s glistening chords, ringing harmonics, and ambient sound washes underpinning D’Angelo’s lyrical and searching bass clarinet. And the improvised interludes “Bloq” and “Amena” sustain the floating, ethereal vibe, concluding Meg Nem Sa on a note of calm -- the calm after the storm.
